Dark Sky Lighting - Higher Utility Bills

  • The Washington DC Metro Area Wastes 41.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity with bad lighting every year !

  • California wastes 33,336,000 kWh/year six valley cities (metropolitan areas)!

  • A typical streetlight uses a 400 watt metal halide bulb.  If the streetlight were replaced with a dark skies compatible "cutoff fixture" which directs light downward instead of light shining upwards and sideways, a 250 watt metal halide bulb would produce approximately the same light on the street, but it would cost less!  The municipality would save an estimated $52.80 per year for that light.  A municipality that has 10,000 fixtures could save approximately $528,000 per year in electrical costs, and would reap the benefits of significantly reduced light pollution as well.

  • Homeowners and businesses can also reap proportional savings by installing and replacing inefficient, pollution generating fixtures, with dark sky compatible lights.
